Watching around 80 balloons simultaneously rise above the surreal landscape is a paradoxically serene adrenaline rush. Absurdly quiet except for the occasional gas expulsion, there is a moment when the rising sun hits the cliffs creating a soft glow visually synonymous with ancient ruins. It is incredulous that people lived in these carved out and eroded rock formations up until only 60 years ago and continue to dry pumpkin seeds for export in the surrounding valleys and fields.
